The Kinks Biography
The Kinks were formed in 1964 in North London by brothers Ray and Dave Davies. Like many of the groups of the era, they began life as an R n B band although their own unique style was soon to shine through via songs written by Ray Davies. The band enjoyed massive success in the sixties and also released a landmark album in 1968 titled ‘The Kinks Are The Village Green Preservation Society’. This album is still to this day highly regarded by fans and critics alike. As The Kinks went into the seventies, Ray became even more ambitious and started writing concept albums that mixed music and theatre. The band recorded the rock operas ‘ Preservation. Soap Opera’ and ‘Schoolboys In Disgrace’, before returning to the traditional album format. This change in style coincided with a different record label and a push into the American market. For most of the eighties the band were seen as a major attraction playing many large arena shows and releasing regular albums.
The Kinks went on a lengthy hiatus in 1996, enabling both Ray Davies and Dave Davies to explore solo projects. Rumours of a reunion however still persist and Ray sometimes encourages these.
