Rick Danko Biography
Rick Danko was born in a small town in Ontario, Canada and became a member of The Hawks, which metamorphosed into The Band. The Band came to prominence both as a stand alone act and also as Bob Dylan’s most famous backing musicians. As well as this, The Band released a number of studio albums between 1968 and 1977, including the hugely influential debut, ‘ Music From Big Pink’, in 1968 and ‘The Band’ in 1969.
Deciding to come off the road The Band played one final “Farewell” concert during Thanksgiving Weekend in November 1976 which featured many of the artists they had worked with over the years. These included Ronnie Hawkins, Eric Clapton and of course Bob Dylan amongst many others. Once The Band stopped touring, the various members busied themselves with sessions or their own solo albums. Rick Danko released his self titled solo album in 1977.
For a time in the early to mid eighties, Rick worked with fellow band member Richard Manuel, before once again reforming The Band. The duo format worked well until during a tour, Richard committed suicide. The Band continued to record and perform with Rick also recording and performing live until his death in December 1999.
