Leslie West Band Biography
Leslie West first picked up a guitar in anger as it were, in the sixties, when he was a member of The Vagrants. The Vagrants were just one of many bands on the club circuit in Long Island, along with The Young Rascals and The Hassles which featured Billy Joel. Many people however will remember Leslie as a founder member of Mountain, alongside Felix Papalardi. They were later joined by drummer Corky Laing. The band grew out of the sessions for Leslie’s first solo album entitled ‘Mountain’. Aside from a short period during the seventies, when Leslie was a member of West Bruce and Laing, alongside Corky and former Cream bassist, Jack Bruce, Mountain has taken up a large part of his time. It was between spells with Mountain that West Bruce and Laing, recorded two studio albums, ‘Why Doncha’ and ‘Things We Like’. Following these albums and a number of tours, the trio split leaving a posthumous album in their wake. Jack Bruce returned to his solo career and Leslie and Corky rejoined Mountain briefly, before Leslie also embarked on a solo career
Leslie's second solo album, ‘The Great Fatsby’, emerged in the mid seventies. This album featured many world-renowned musicians, including Mick Jagger, who allegedly only participated if he could play guitar rather than sing!
The solo album spawned a tour and Leslie formed the band, Leslie West's Wild West Show, which also included Corky and future Foreigner guitarist, Mick Jones. There were of course to be more returns to Mountain over the next twenty five years, right up to the present. It would seem that Leslie is content to split his time between Mountain, alongside Corky, and recording solo albums in a blues rock vein, with help from some of his famous musical friends.
